Remember your first big "AH-HA" moment? Maybe you were working on a cool project or listening in class and suddenly your mind leapt to an astonishing conclusion. In a moment of clarity, you could see EVERYTHING and understand it perfectly!
Didn't that feel amazing? Wouldn't you love to feel it regularly? You can!
In fact, that AH-HA is exactly what I strive to give every person I meet as often as humanly possible. And why not? I believe lifting the sights, sharing opportunities & offering new prospects to other people is what humans were designed to do. :)
So I ask you... why are some schools & jobs so humdrum when they don't need to be?
Well, let's look at the really great schools... I've studied in quite a few of them... eight years of higher education at several of the world's best art & fashion schools gives me a pretty good perspective on the quality of education. (NYC's Pratt Institute, the French-founded Maison Sapho School and the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC) They each offer world-class theories, rare techniques and the incredible competition of the finest minds to challenge & inspire you. And the bonds of friendship you forge when you're working at that creative level last a lifetime and make you smile for years to come.
And great jobs? I was an Art Director at two of the worlds top 10
advertising agencies in NYC on fabulous ad campaigns for major global
brands ...Cover Girl, Citibank, and more. I worked for an astonishing Creative Director, Richard Huebner, whose visionary thinking led the Cover Girl brand to great heights for decades. Every day was a new &
wonderful adventure creating beautiful ads & inventing new products.
What a great job! Hard work was never more fun! I even loved working
over-time! And winning national design awards was pretty great too! :)
I've also worked for a number of New York City fashion designers... as a pattern maker and as a sample-maker - doing fine sewing & detailed embellishing. My longest stint was 3 years freelancing every season on both the NYC Ready-To-Wear and the Paris Haute Couture collections of the American brand Chado Ralph Rucci. That was so amazing. Ralph is an incredibly creative & also a very kind man. I consider some of his practices to be the most brilliant business ideas I've ever witnessed. He had a way of generously lifting the spirits of his entire team in such a wholesome way... it was an inspiration to be near him and a joy to speak with him. The business world could learn a great deal from Ralph.
Then, I was asked to teach in the master's program at Drexel University...so I developed the format & taught the couture corseted evening wear classes for a number of years. It was wonderful watching the student's talents blossom & their confidence grow as they did the detailed homework & designed their own high couture gowns for the runway shows. Two of my couture students even won the Paris international fashion competition "The Arts of Fashion" - the only two Americans ever to win that coveted accolade as well as a year of school at France's most prestigious fashion school in the world. What an honor... to be an instructor for such creative young designers! Just thinking of them makes my heart smile.
So there are some amazingly great schools...and some amazingly great jobs. But how do you find them?
I believe you find the greatest things in life by always seeking and seeing the greatness right where you are! Greatness isn't "somewhere else." It's with you all the time. It's a state of mind you bring to your own place & time.
