Have you watched “Crash Landing on You”? If you haven’t and is wondering what it is — it is a Netflix original K-Drama.
The drama comes with 16 episodes and resolves around the life of an obnoxious rich South Korean woman (Yoon Seri played by Son Ye-Jin) who, during parachuting, was embroiled in a typhoon and was whisked away to North Korea. While in North Korea, she meets Captain Ri, which is played by Hyun Bin. Ri seem to be the type of person who follows everything by the book and is as straight as an arrow. He wondered if it would be better to get rid of the obnoxious stranger. It was hilarious to listen to him ponder in his mind “what should I do? what should I do/”.
He decided to help Yoon Seri to return to South Korea.
However, before this is even made possible, Yoon Seri has to disguise as Captain Ri’s fiancee and stop the rumour mongering among the villagers. It reminds me of the condition of my own village and relatives in the old days when people still cared and were nosy about each other.
Of course, pretty soon, romance fills the entire drama, but not before we see the beauty of having neighbours and friends who actually care.
The small village where the drama was filmed was idyllic. The villagers led simple lives. Everyone seem to know one another, and everyone looks out for one another. These were enviable qualities that no longer seem to exist in many films, be it the K-drama or anything else. It is also ceasing to exist in our life as well. Most of us don’t know who our neighbours are…unfortunately.
Yoon Seri’s character also grows to become one who is respectful of others and no longer the spoiled brat she was initially. It is quite refreshing to see people change for the better. And of course, we get to see the reason for her bratty attributes — she feels unloved by her own family and is betrayed by her own brother.
What are the effects of the drama on me. personally? The first impact would be that I now know more about Hyun Bin and Son Ye-Jin. I never bothered to know who is who in the K-Drama world. Suddenly, however, I am looking at their faces and see if they underwent plastic surgery for their blemish free good looks. (haha)
The second effect is now, if the opportunity arises, I would like to visit both South and North Korea. Both seem so interesting suddenly. I’ve had friends going to South Korea for their holidays, but I was never keen on exploring the country. It is true what they say — a good film is a good publicity to lure tourists to come to a specific country, location, venue…
The third effect would be this — I am missing the old days more as a result of this drama. I miss the qualities of the people of old — their helpful nature, the nosiness and kindness. I miss it all.
If there is a new film that inspires, I have to say that “Crash Landing on You” is definitely one of it.
